Hello, My name is Stephanie. I live in Michigan and have a small business making hand crafted candles, soaps and bath and body products. I have a web site but am looking for ways to market my products. I will be thankful for your help with ideas in marketing my business.

Hi Stephanie,
First of all, I want you to stop thinking of yourself as a small business. You are only as small as you choose to be and if you are thinking this way, you will never succeed. Next I want you to look for shows, Fairs, Street Fairs, Etc.,anyplace you can display your candles. Then I want you to print up some flyers and put them in Laundromats, Waiting Rooms, any place that is high traffic, driving the
public to where you have your candles on display. Print up business cards. This should get you started. Your product is an impulse item and people do not respond well to Newspaper. or Radio Ads, it must be seen. You must create or be in a place where you have lots of pedestrian traffic.
Stay in Touch.

Hi Stephanie,

John has some excellent ideas, here are my two cents,

1. You could approach stores which are likely to stock up your products on an experimental basis, stores which have a similar (or complimentary) range of products as you have mentioned.

2. It will be good to focus especially on the flyers and mktg. stuff around holidays or related occasions like say Valentines etc.

3. In case you are not very articular about building your own brand name, you could even try being a supplier to other larger brands of similar products, or start your own subbrand under their banner.

Regards
Aditi

Hello John, Thank you for your reply. John You are right so a man think so is he. I see Breeze Enterprises known around the USA. I have done some of the fairs here in Michigan and have rented booths and came out without making any money. The largest sale was $25.00. Most of the people come to spectate and eat. Most of the fairs that I was able to find was State Parks, and Churches mostly. There are some Trade Centers that I would like to try when I have their asking price for a spot. They run Ads and let people know that they are open. I like the idea of "print up some flyers and put them in Laundromats, Waiting Rooms, any place that is high traffic". I have the time right now to make them you and go to some of the places you are talking about. I will make flyers all of this week and spend all of next week putting them out.

Your two cent is welcomed Aditi, happy to meet you. I didn't think to offer my products on an experimental basis let alone stores or shops that had the same or similar products that I have. Thinking about it there are a number of the same things from a mixture of companies on the shelves. I agree, focusing on marketing for up coming holidays would be a good thing for the impulsive and gift shoppers. I think I had better stuck to my own brand products. I like mine better :-)

Hi Stephanie !

New here and an entrepreneur just like you !

Some good ideas already here.. another one : "Paint Your Wagon "

That is , put a small banner at the back of your car advertising your services and pointing them to your website/ purchase points !

A variation " I LUUUV the Lady D Candles..find them at : ..."

to be put on the Cars of your friends/ good customers...

That way you wil have soon some v. mobile and v. visible "hoardings" across the city !

You may have to check local laws though ..maybe the same is not allowed where you are, although it is where I am !

Best !

Hello Stephanie,

I would also recommend getting a trial version or a one day complete version of Wordtracker.

Do your research on Candles...and Handmade Candles and see what people are saying around that area.

If you can help fill the need that the Market is asking for - you will be much closer to the Target.

OH - http://www.inventory.overture.com will also give you those statistics based on singular word or phrase entries.

All you have to do is copy the results to an excel file and analyze them.

Then...look at the competition and find out where they are weak and convince others that you are stronger.

A whole lot of SMART PPC and SEO will help as well.

Best of success to you....

Cijaye.
