All marketing, irrespective of industry, works on the same basic principles. The deployment of these principles vary.
In IT, broadly there are four main segments - end-consumers, enterprise, developer communities and trade. Marketing to each segment is an independent art and science. And I think beyond the scope of this post. From experience, let me tell you that IT marketing requires extremely strong communication skills. E.g. Try putting down all of Oracle's features in a single ten word sentence to put on a wall poster.
